Diamond, famous for being ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’ is the birthstone of April.
It is the hardest gemstone on Earth. Due to its hardness and having the most exquisite luster and fire, diamond is renowned for being the most highly prized of gems.
Pure colourless diamonds are the most sought after, however there are also the beautiful, highly desirable rare fancy coloured diamonds. These can be of almost of any colour: yellows, pinks, greens, oranges, purples or the extremely rare blues and reds. Colour in Diamonds can be caused by various different factors such as colouring elements like Boron in blue Diamonds or natural radiation causing Diamonds to appear green.
The largest diamond ever discovered is the Cullinan found in South Africa in 1905. In its rough state it weighed in at an extraordinary 3,106 carats and measured over 10cm in length. From this diamond crystal nine principal polished diamonds were cut, the two largest are mounted in the British Crown Jewels, Cullinan I a pear shape also known as the Star of Africa (530.20 carats) in the Sovereign’s Sceptre and Cullinan II the Second Star of Africa (317.40 carats) in the Imperial State Crown. These are the world's largest colourless and flawless diamonds and if you have never seen them treat yourself to a close up view at the Tower of London.
Celebrities are famed for being adorned with stunning diamond jewellery. A few even have their gems named after them. Elizabeth Taylor was renowned for her extravagant diamond jewellery. With her Asscher cut diamond ring, given to her by her husband at the time Richard Burton, being an impressive 33.20 carats. It was renamed from the Krupp to the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond in her honour. Few objects of desire arouse as much passion as a diamond, her most notorious would become the Taylor-Burton Diamond of which Burton is reported to have declared in 1969, having just been outbid for it at auction, “I was going to get that diamond if it cost me my life or 2 million dollars whichever was the greater”. Thankfully, fine quality diamonds don't necessarily have to cost as much.
