Her Majesty The Queen's Tiaras

Her Majesty has one of the greatest jewellery collections in the world with numerous pieces that have been created, inherited, and gifted during her 70-year reign. Here we explore some of her tiaras, a poignant symbol of royalty, history and dazzling jewellery craftsmanship and wonder.

Grand Duchess Vladimir

Smuggled out of Russia after the assassination of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, this magnificent tiara belonged to the Grand Duchess Vladimir, wife of the Tsar's uncle. A rather fabulous woman, the Grand Duchess was the last Romanov to escape out of Russia and with the help of an English antiques dealer, smuggled many of her jewels to Britain. When she died in 1920, Queen Mary bought her namesake tiara, having it repaired and made so that the dangling pearls could be interchanged with a set of emeralds she owned, or the tiara could be worn without either. Regularly worn by the Queen throughout her reign, this is a stunning piece, with a fantastic story to go with it.
Queen Mary Fringe

The Fringe Tiara was made for the Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary in 1919 from a necklace gifted by Queen Victoria for her wedding in 1893. It is in the 'Kokoshnik' style, popularised by the Romanovs of Russia, with 47 graduated brilliant and rose cut diamond set spikes, separated by 46 smaller spikes between. The Queen wore this tiara on her wedding day in 1947, which broke just before the ceremony and had to be quickly fixed by the royal jeweller! Princess Anne also wore the Queen Mary Fringe for her wedding in 1973 as did the Queen's granddaughter Princess Beatrice in 2020.
Girls of Great Britain and Ireland

A gift from her grandmother Queen Mary, Her Majesty was given the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara in 1947 for her wedding. The Queen has worn this piece many times during her reign, as well as on certain currency throughout the Commonwealth. The tiara is made of silver and gold and the festoon motifs are set with diamonds. Originally, pearls topped the tiara, but Queen Mary had these changed to diamonds in 1914 and the pearls were used in the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara. The tiara also has a coronet frame and can also be worn as a necklace.
Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara

The Cambridge Lovers Knot tiara is a fantastic display of lustrous pearls and diamonds. The tiara is a copy of the nineteenth century original, created in Germany for Princess Augusta of Hesse Cassel, Duchess of Cambridge and sold at auction in 1981. Queen Mary commissioned this tiara and used pearls already in her collection in its creation. A favourite of Princess Diana, now the tiara from Her Majesty's collection is frequently worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, a wonderful connection to the owner of the original.
Delhi Durbar

For the Indian coronation celebration in 1911 a new tiara was made for Queen Mary and has since been passed to the Queen Mother, before becoming part of Her Majesty's collection. The Delhi Durbar tiara is a complete circle of diamond set scroll and garland motifs made in platinum and gold. Originally, the tiara was set with 10 emeralds, which were later removed, and various diamonds were interchanged into the tiara, including Cullinan III and IV. The Queen has never worn this piece in public, but it has been worn by the Duchess of Cornwall to an event in 2005.
George IV State Diadem

Made in 1820 for George IV, the State Diadem has been worn by Queens and Consorts since for coronations. Initially the numerous diamonds and pearls set in the diadem were rented until Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837. The jeweller sold the original stones used since 1820 to the royal family which avoided continually un-setting and resetting them from the frame. The Queen wore this to her coronation in 1952 and continues to wear to and from the State Opening of Parliament.
Cartier Halo

The Cartier Halo tiara was commissioned by George VI as a gift for his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the future Queen Mother). The platinum tiara features flowing scroll motifs and is set with 739 brilliant cut diamonds and 114 baguette cut diamonds. The tiara was gifted to Her Majesty on her eighteenth birthday and although she herself has never worn it publicly, she has lent it to other members of her family. Most recently the Duchess of Cambridge wore it for her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
Greville Emerald Kokoshnik

Not seen in public for over half a century, the spectacular Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara was lent by the Queen to her granddaughter Princess Eugenie for her wedding in 2018. Made in 1921 for Mrs Greville, she bequeathed her jewellery collection including this tiara to the Queen Mother, which was then passed onto her daughter, the Queen. The tiara is set with a central cabochon emerald, 6 other emeralds spaced around the rest of the frame and an abundance of diamonds covering the rest of the piece.
